Akha people are spread across Asia in five of its countries, China, Burma, Laos, and Vietnam And Thailand.  In Thailand the majority of akha live in the northern region of the country and its five provinces are Tak, Prae, Lampang, Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai. Over half of the Akha population in Thailand live in Chiang Rai province about 65,000 person.akha people all five province. We have population 95,000 Akha.
The primary occupation for Akha people in Thailand is in agriculture activities range from rice, corn and fruit tree cultivation to animal husbandry. Akha people carry with them a strong belief in their traditional knowledge and their religion of ancestral worship.  Akha people have rich culture which includes many ceremonies dating back as far as 2,700 years.  A respect for the forest and its products in enshrined in Akha culture, and thus a reciprocal relationship has been formed.  Until the present time Akha people had only been supported by natural products.

Akha people have a traditional belief that a mother should have only one child, therefore, when a mother births two children it seen as a bad sign.   It is also believed to have negative connotations for the entire family, because it is viewed as having the potential of destroying everything from crops to the family’s home.  Others villagers will also view the birth of twin babies in negative light, as a result, the family is often shunned and barred from any sort of community gatherings. Handicapped children are also seen in a similar light.
In an attempt to solve this problem AFECT has initiated a “Save the Twin Babies for Akha People Project.” AFECT is currently supporting 92 children, both twins and handicaps. This is achieved with the provision of clothing, milk, blankets and hospital services for up to 6 months for each family. At the same time AFECT is continuously working to promote the integration of twins and handicap children into Akha communities, and in the future hopes to change the traditional belief of killing twin babies and handicap children.
